Retreat Meadow Mergs
There were 3 pairs of Hooded Mergansers playing in the icy waters around the island that is adjacent to the Route 30 boat landing. Atop the Osprey nesting tripod sat a Red-tailed Hawk looking one way, then another, scanning the area for prey(?).
Westminster Ruffed Grouse
When leaving I-91 on the exit ramp for Westminster a Ruffed Grouse strutted onto the pavement causing us to break and quickly swerve to avoid hitting it. It made it to strut another day.
Turkeys in the Cornfield
Going north on I-91. In the field to the left just before exit 3, we counted 22 Turkeys foraging in that pasture. Still there as of 12/10.
Pine Grosbeaks in Downtown Brattleboro
A flock of 30-40 Pine Grosbeaks have been hanging out in downtown Brattleboro, feeding on the yew berries next to the Center Church educational wing. As I watched them yesterday, they wandered between the yews, large maples along Main Street in front of the church and behind the church near the railroad tracks. They make an appearance on the Brattleboro Area Christmas Bird Count in southeastern Vermont every 5 to 6 years. Last time was 2007. The flock included females, and young males - no mature males. Photos are posted on my blog: http://tailsofbirding.blogspot.com
